Filipa Pato and her husband William Wouters popped by last Friday to share their wines from Portugal. They shared two wines her father makes at his winery: a sparkling wine made from the Maria Gomez grape, and an aged Baga from 2013. Filipa also shared three wines from her winery: a white blend of indigenous varieties, and two Bagas-- one aged in anfora and one aged in oak.

Tasting Recap: Cru beaujolais with Anne

We poured some tasty wines this past Friday, all from Beaujolais. The goal was to show off some of our favorite Crus, and indeed, the Foillard Fleurie that we opened as a surprise was the first to fly off the shelves.

wines presented by Anne Brown of Robins Cellars

Dupeuble 2016 (Beaujolais, Burgundy)
Ok, ok, not CRU Beaujolais, but we wanted one blanc selection to share with you!

Diochon 2015 (Moulin au Vent, Cru Beaujolais, Burgundy)
Rich, robust, and lush gamay that goes down easy. This is a Kewsick favorite-- whenever we stock this on the shelves we sell out within a few days.

Bichot 'Roche Granit' 2015 (Julienas, Cru Beaujolais, Burgundy)
This Cru was supposedly named after Julius Caesar to commemorate the Roman influence on the local wine trade (there's over 2,000 years of history making wine here!). The wine is from classic Beaujolais granite soils, which the winemaker notes on the label.

Thivin 'Zaccharie' 2015 (Cotes de Brouilly, Cru Beaujolais, Burgundy)
Rare Cru Beaujolais from the donut hole of Cotes de Brouilly at the very southern end. This is a blend of old, old vineyards, and very little of this ever reaches Virginia!

Chignard 2016 (Fleurie, Cru Beaujolais, Burgundy)
Blossomy, fruit-centered, floral bouquet gamay with an uncanny ability to pair with just about everything....

Friday Re-Cap with kendall

1/1/2018

Last Friday (December 29th) we finished out the year with a special tasting of sparkling wines, hosted by Kendall Koehler from Elite wines. Here were the wines:
Sparkling Wine for Auld Lang Syne

Conca d'Oro Prosecco (Italy)
bright, value bubbly from Italy, made from the Glera grape
This wine had a zesty mouthfeel, with just a hint of sweetness. The antique bottle shape also makes this a pretty interesting bottle of bubbly.

Cremant d'Limoux (France)
...this place has been making sparkling wine longer than most other regions (long before Dom Perignon made wine!)
When we popped the Cremant d'Limoux it was ultra crisp and laser-like in it's focus and bright acidity. We instantly wished we had a dozen fresh-shucked oysters...

Mader Cremant d'Alsace (France)
pinot blanc and chardonnay make up this blend from Alsace
Mader's exquisite cremant was the value of the night, delivering serious quality for the price.

Gonet-Medeville Champagne (France)
premier cru Blanc de Noirs Champagne for New Years!
And we treated the crowd to a proper Champagne-- the blanc de noirs had a slight pink tinge (a beautiful, jewel-like color), and tasted rich and concentrated, with a zippy finish.
